Grenora News by Wanda Rasmussen

 

            “God is our Shepard” was the theme of Vacation Bible School at St. Olaf Lutheran Church August 3-7. It was led by counselors of The Upper Missouri Ministries Bible Camp near Epping who all stayed at the home of Darin and Angela Melgaard. Counselors included Amanda Cook from Flaxville, MT who attends the University of Mary; Erin Cawley from Inkster, ND who attends the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks; Carol Tweten from Glyndon, MN who attends Concordia College in Moorhead, MN; Lana Ross from Grenora who attends Jamestown College and Heather Kemp from Williston who attends the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks.

 

            Pastor Steve Bliss of the Grenora Lutheran Parish and his son, Kyle are on a vacation to California to see his folks. He will return August 20. For emergency pastoral care you may call Evelene Krogen, the church secretary, at 694-3411. In his absence Pastor Mary Schave from Glenburn led the August 10 service and lay pastor Jim Stout from Round Prairie will lead the next service. St. Olaf Lutheran is still in need of a church custodian for approximately 10 hours per week. Call the church office to apply. Howard and Sandra Ross were representing St. Olaf Lutheran by serving  at the UMM Sweet Corn Festival August 10.

 

            Pauline Kilbride is looking for someone with a pick-up who would be willing to haul some yard waste for her. You may call her at 694-4507 or 774-0242.

 

            Shelby Pederson age 13 of Williston recently was with a People to People group which toured six different countries from June 10-July 5. She is the daughter of Karen McDaniel and the late Daniel Pederson. Her grandmother is Helen Pederson of Grenora.

 

            The Grenora Senior Citizen’s Club will meet for their monthly meeting on Wednesday August 13 following the congregate meal at the Senior Center . The meetings now start at 1:00p.m. ; to give more time for afternoon card playing. About 5:00p.m. ; the group shares a potluck supper. Heather Anderson has recently returned from Bismarck where she was a delegate from our area to the Silver Haired Assembly. Last month the group hosted the residents from the Kensington who came to town with prizes and bingo. Many former Grenora residents were on the bus. There was a birthday cake served in honor of Dorothy Kilbride and Marvin Hoff. Please mark your calendars for a foot clinic by health nurse, Barb Andrist on August 27.             There will be a bridal shower for Shannon Sneva Saturday, August 16, 7:00p.m. at the United Lutheran Church in Zahl. Shannon, the daughter of Craig and Mary Sneva, is the bride-to-be of Devyn Smith the son of Darin and Dottie Smith.

 

            Nine members and three guests attended the July 21 meeting of the Peaceful Piecer’s Quilt Guild. Guests included Esther Erickson’s sister, Sylvia from West Fargo ,

Clarice Hanson’s sister, Thora from Minot and a former member, Sheila Christianson from Williston. Roll call was answered by where you would like to hold the picnic. It was unanimously decided to have it at Sunset Park in Grenora. It will be Monday, August 18 at 6:00p.m. The meal will be potluck. Bring your own beverage, plate and utensils. The next row-by-row strip to complete will be the Bow Tie pattern. Unfinished Objects (UFO’s) were shown by Esther Erickson, Wanda Rasmussen, Sandra Petersen and Carol Berg. Many members ended up having to pay the penalty of $1.00 for not having a UFO to show. Many other quilted items were shown including three quilts by Sheila Christianson, who was taught how to quilt by club members. Anyone interested in learning how to quilt along with those who already know how are encouraged to come to the picnic.

 

            Volleyball and Football practice will be starting on August 18. If you have not already signed up to play; do so now. School starts on August 21 at 8:35a.m. Families should have received a mailing from the school with a school calendar, applications for free and reduced meals, a parent-student handbook, physical information, volleyball letter, transportation letter, and the elementary school supply list. The supply list will also be posted at Wal-Mart.  Mr. Jeff Nold, a Grenora teacher, was signed on as the head football coach in Medicine Lake . Grenora and Medicine Lake play as a team on the Montana Football circuit. New faces at the school will include Mrs. Erin Brurud, the new 3rd/4th grade teacher and Mark Soholt, the new head of maintenance. The school is still in need of a Music teacher and sub-Bus drivers. There was a good-bye letter published in the Town and Country Crossroads from former music teacher Mary Beth Furguson.

 

            Janet Skabo was welcomed home with a welcome sign as you enter town. She has been in Minneapolis undergoing chemotherapy and radiation for cancer. Welcome Home, Janet!
